At Georgetown Sleep Dentistry, we specialize in providing anxiety-free dental care through comprehensive sleep dentistry options. Our practice stands out as the only dental clinic in Georgetown with a board-certified anesthesiologist on staff, ensuring hospital-level safety and comfort for all sedation procedures.
What Is Sleep Dentistry?
Sleep dentistry uses carefully administered medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Sedation levels range from mild relaxation to complete unconsciousness, allowing patients to receive necessary dental care without anxiety or discomfort.
Our Anesthesiologist:
Dr. Firas Al-Qadhi is a board-certified anesthesiologist who serves as staff anesthesiologist at Guelph General Hospital and assistant clinical professor at McMaster University. He completed his anesthesiology training at the University of Ottawa and was certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2010. With over 15 years of hospital anesthesiology experience, Dr. Al-Qadhi brings the same level of expert care and safety monitoring to our Georgetown dental practice that patients would experience in a major hospital operating room.
Sedation Options Available
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Our mildest sedation option is perfect for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. You remain fully conscious and can communicate throughout the procedure. Effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed, allowing you to drive yourself home. This option works well for routine cleanings, simple fillings, and patients with mild dental anxiety.
IV Sedation (Conscious Sedation)
IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream, allowing Dr. Al-Qadhi to precisely control your sedation level throughout the procedure. This creates a deeply relaxed, dream-like state where you may drift in and out of consciousness. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. Our anesthesiologist and registered nurses provide continuous monitoring throughout treatment. This option is ideal for moderate to severe dental anxiety, longer procedures such as dental implants or multiple extractions, wisdom teeth removal, and patients undergoing multiple procedures in one visit.
General Anesthesia (Deep Sedation)
General anesthesia produces complete unconsciousness, exactly like what patients experience during surgery at a hospital. You are completely unaware of the procedure, feel no discomfort, and have absolutely zero memory of the appointment. Dr. Al-Qadhi administers and manages the anesthesia with advanced monitoring equipment tracking all vital signs. Hospital-standard emergency protocols are in place, and our team of registered nurses assists with monitoring. This option is recommended for severe dental anxiety or phobia, complex oral surgery procedures, patients with special needs, those with difficulty controlling movements, and when multiple extensive procedures need to be completed in one visit.
Safety Standards
Safety is our top priority at Georgetown Sleep Dentistry. Our monitoring equipment and emergency protocols meet hospital standards. We continuously track heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and end-tidal CO2 levels. Our team includes registered nurses specifically trained in sedation monitoring and emergency response. Before any sedation, we conduct thorough medical history reviews to identify potential risk factors or contraindications. We use the minimum effective sedation level for each patient's needs, and Dr. Al-Qadhi can adjust medication in real-time based on patient response.
